School "Rules"! -- Ten Activities for Establishing Classroom Rules
Starting the school year on the right foot includes establishing classroom rules that will last the whole year through. Many teachers involve students in establishing their classroom rules. (Surprisingly, student-created rules are often much the same as -- or even tougher than -- rules a teacher might create. After all, students want to attend school in a safe environment, and they want to know the boundaries when it comes to classroom behavior.) Included: Ten activities for involving students in creating classroom rules.

Each week, Education World spotlights books of interest to educators. This week, read a brief summary of two more of our "top 50 books for educators."

Young Investigators: The Project Approach in the Early Years
This book from Teachers College Press applies the project approach to teaching, which has traditionally been associated with the middle grades, to early childhood education. This can not only energize and focus early childhood lessons, but also lay a foundation for inquisitive thought that students can benefit from for the rest of their school years, even for the rest of their lives.

Teaching Science for Understanding: A Practical Guide for Middle and High School Teachers
We all know that the United States has to "play catch-up" with science and math teaching, compared to other countries, and this book is a serious attempt to contribute positively to that effort. Science may be especially susceptible to passive, direct-instruction styles, and this author instead advocates active, inquiry-based learning. A unique feature of this book is a set of excerpts from popular science textbooks along with suggestions for making the content contained in those books come alive for students.

    NEW! FROM EDUCATION WORLD
    ***************************************************************************

Each week, Education World spotlights books of interest to educators. This week, read a brief summary of two more of our "top 50 books for educators."

Young Investigators: The Project Approach in the Early Years
This book from Teachers College Press applies the project approach to teaching, which has traditionally been associated with the middle grades, to early childhood education. This can not only energize and focus early childhood lessons, but also lay a foundation for inquisitive thought that students can benefit from for the rest of their school years, even for the rest of their lives.
Click to learn more or to purchase this book.

    Students "Stand Tall" Against Bullying
In a proactive attempt to squelch "bullying" behavior before it even emerges, one New York district embraced an anti-bullying theme. Through varied methods and activities, students at all levels were not just encouraged to avoid bullying behaviors themselves but to help the victims, either by standing up for other students or by seeking appropriate assistance. Included: See how the district spread the anti-bullying theme across the ages and the curriculum.

    Where Does Looping End?

Morgan, a student in Mrs. Bumphrey's first-grade class, needed constant prodding to get her work done. The following year, when Mrs. Bumphrey moved with her students to second grade, Morgan's work habits had not improved. And Mrs. Bumphrey kept after Morgan.

One day when Morgan was especially far behind, Mrs. Bumphrey told her, "If you don't get that page done before recess, you won't be able to go out and play."

Morgan started to write, then looked up and asked her, "Do you teach third grade too?"
